Head and neck cancers

Anatomical site, HPV and functional impact need to remain visible in head and neck research.

Editorial update · October 6, 2026

Context and biological diversity

The category covers different regions, such as the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx, and is often studied through squamous cell carcinoma. Thyroid, brain and skin tumors are generally treated as separate groups. HPV’s role is particularly relevant in the oropharynx and should not be assumed uniformly across all sites.

What research makes it possible to study

TCGA described genomic differences between HPV-associated and smoking-related squamous cell carcinomas, as well as diversity by location. These findings support research stratification. A candidate alteration’s presence does not prove an intervention’s efficacy or make all HPV-positive tumors equivalent.

Application in a research project

A project can integrate site, laboratory definition of HPV, tobacco exposure and speech and swallowing outcomes. Recording function before any intervention helps interpret changes. Access assessment should measure the intervals between first signs, diagnosis and the start of care as separate stages.

Research questions

Which factors are associated with swallowing recovery in a cohort with a defined anatomical site?

Study design
Prospective follow-up using standardized functional measures and stratification by HPV and exposure.
What to measure
Baseline and longitudinal function, quality of life, nutritional support and follow-up completeness.
Interpretation limits
Different tumor sites and methods of defining HPV can hinder comparison. Losses to follow-up may underestimate functional impact.
