Non-melanoma skin cancer

The non-melanoma label includes different diseases and requires precise definition of histology and the unit of analysis.

Editorial update · October 6, 2026

Context and biological diversity

Basal cell and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas have distinct behavior and risks. The non-melanoma category is useful for organization but should not obscure histology, lesion site or immunosuppression. One person can have multiple lesions; counting tumors and counting patients produces different denominators.

What research makes it possible to study

A genomic analysis of basal cell carcinoma identified alterations in the Hedgehog pathway and other events associated with tumor biology. This study is specific to that histology. It offers hypotheses about formation and progression mechanisms without justifying transfer of conclusions to squamous cell carcinoma or other skin neoplasms.

Application in a research project

A lesion registry can document site, size, histology, margins described in the report and recurrence while linking lesions from the same person. The analysis needs to account for within-person correlation. Prevention studies can measure sun exposure and protection, considering retrospective recall and behavior changes after diagnosis.

Research questions

What is recurrence per lesion and per person in a collection of skin carcinomas with a defined histology?

Study design
A longitudinal registry with separate participant and lesion identifiers and uniform recurrence criteria.
What to measure
Local recurrence, new lesions, observation time and completeness of histological confirmation.
Interpretation limits
Procedure-based registries may omit lesions and duplicate participants. An exposure–tumor association can be confounded by age and access to care.
