Angiogenesis

Formation of new blood vessels from existing vessels, studied in both normal processes and tumours.

Editorial update · October 6, 2026

The process

Blood vessels supply tissues with oxygen and nutrients. Cancer research studies angiogenesis in relation to tumour growth and interactions with nearby cells. It is not exclusive to cancer.

What a measurement shows

Vessel numbers, molecular signals and perfusion describe different aspects. A marker in a sample does not capture all vascular function. Studies of perivascular niches also show why vessel organisation can matter beyond quantity.

Using the concept when reading

Identify the measure, tissue and sampling time. Separate a hypothesis about vessel formation from evidence about a treatment that changes it. Associations with outcomes must be tested in the specific setting.

Interpretation limits

Greater vascularisation does not alone determine prognosis or treatment response.
