Leukemias

Cell lineage, rate of progression and molecular context define different questions in leukemia.

Editorial update · October 6, 2026

Context and biological diversity

Leukemias are neoplasms of blood-forming tissues, with acute and chronic groups and myeloid or lymphoid lineages. Initial diagnosis, remission and relapse are biologically distinct points. Precise identification of the entity, classification and previous exposures is needed before combining samples or comparing outcomes.

What research makes it possible to study

TCGA characterized adult de novo acute myeloid leukemia, relating genomic and epigenomic alterations. This reference is specific to AML and its study population. It allows hypotheses about cellular pathways and combinations of alterations; it does not summarize ALL, CML, CLL or leukemias related to previous treatments.

Application in a research project

Measurable residual disease studies need to specify the method, detection limit, material and collection time. A negative result means no detection within that assay, not absolute absence of neoplastic cells. Relapse research can use paired samples to examine clonal persistence and change.

Research questions

Are a residual marker’s dynamics associated with relapse in a defined entity and treatment phase?

Study design
A longitudinal cohort with fixed collection windows and outcome-blinded analysis.
What to measure
Positivity and analytical sensitivity, relapse, observation time and death as a competing event.
Interpretation limits
Different methods and thresholds are not directly equivalent. An association between residual disease and relapse does not prove that changing management based on the result improves outcomes.
