Apoptosis

A regulated form of cell death involved in tissue maintenance and investigated in cancer biology.

Editorial update · October 6, 2026

The cellular process

Apoptosis involves internal mechanisms leading to a cell’s elimination. Changes in the regulation of cell survival and death can contribute to tumour development. Cell death can also occur through other mechanisms.

What experiments measure

A study may assess proteins, membrane changes or other apoptosis-related signals. Sampling time and methods affect interpretation. An isolated marker should be read alongside controls and complementary measures of cell fate.

From the laboratory to a clinical question

When a substance is reported to induce apoptosis, examine the model, exposure and comparison. The finding helps investigate a mechanism but does not alone show efficacy, suitable dosing or human safety. The evidence chain must address those questions.

Interpretation limits

Inducing apoptosis in cultured cells does not demonstrate treatment benefit in people.
